Christmas?

Christmas? Surely, not!
Christmas morning means snow covered yards and warm crackling fires and stuff like that. It can't possibly mean this:Shorts and T-Shirts? Warm tropical waters? 90 degree weather? This is quite a different Christmas than I have ever experienced, or may experience again! The picture above was the view from the terrace at the hotel. We awoke to Christmas morning in Thailand. After eating at the breakfast buffet, we got into our swimsuits, slathered on sunblock and swam in this pool:
The second picture is the view from our suite's terrace. To the left you can see the gate that leads directly to the pool. That was super great!

We swam for the better part of the morning and into the afternoon: After swimming and showers, we ate lunch on the terrace at the hotel. At our resort only breakfast was included, but since we didn't have any food yet in our room we ate on the terrace: This is a picture of the kid's Hot Dog that Daniel had:He complained about it, as he does about most things nowadays, but he did eat it once we peeled off all the toppings. The food was quite good, and my meal was really spicy, as Thai food usually is. Our resort is built onto a hillside. The picture above is looking down to the bottom pool and entrance from the upper pool terrace. Our suite was at the level of the upper pool. Here is the view up from the bottom: And this is a good view of the Andaman sea from the terrace:After lunch we went off to the Big C which is like a Wal-Mart Supercenter attached to a mall. While shopping I found this shirt: It's what everyone expects to find in Thailand isn't it?

After Big C, we drove over to Patong beach, which is one of the more touristy areas of Phuket island. To get there we needed to drive up and over a mountain. Since it was about 5:30 at the time, it was quite busy on the roadways:I had to drive up these winding roads avoiding scooters, trucks, and lots of cars coming at me IN MY LANE, passing other slower vehicles. It was insane!

We didn't stop anywhere in Patong, but were just driving by to see some sights along the beach:This was the dome of a mosque:95% of the population of Thailand is Buddhist, and most of the remaining are Islamic, so there were a couple of mosques that we saw. However, there were many more of these kind of images around the island:These kinds of small "shrines" were everywhere, much like the small shrines and roadside stones that are everywhere in Japan.

And we caught the sunset:

Then we drove back to the hotel. By the time we arrived, this guy was having visions of sugarplums again:It was a great day, relaxing, and having fun in Thailand. Tomorrow we're up for some more!
